MAKUA METTO MISSION
Our good friends—Howells, Rolands, Smiths, & Westerholm families—are currently working among the Makua-metto tribe who are the adjacent ethnic group to the Yao. The Makua-metto is a very large sub-ethnic group of the massive Makua. These folks are beginning their work at the same time we are because we all arrived in Mozambique together. We’ve experienced a long, strange journey together and hope to continue the journey in partnership among these two ethnic groups in the two most Northern provinces to coordinate the ministry among the Makua-metto and Yao in order to create structures of partnership which will sustain and cultivate communities of reconciliation long after we have left northern Mozambique.
OUR GROUP’S HISTORY
Years ago back in the states all of us met at Harding University where we were all students. Through prayer groups & Africa interest groups, we formed a team to work in cross-cultural missions in Africa. We met monthly for planning, vision casting, & team dynamics while many of us were in graduate studies and others were working with their sponsoring churches.
We all moved to Lisbon, Portugal March of 2003 in order to learn Portuguese and then moved to Mozambique in December of the same year. At the beginning of 2004, we began conducting a series of survey trips in order to learn about the situation in northern Mozambique.
On July 27th of 2004 our team of six couples decided to form two teams, each one going to a different tribe.
This decision came about as a result of many conversations and with the help of a team mentor, Sam Shewmaker, who came to visit us here in Mozambique. Forming two teams was not the result of personality conflicts on the team and was blessed by all parties involved. It was, however, a very difficult decision due to the closeness of our team. We all consider it to be a great expansion of the work going on in Northern Mozambique. Our plan remains to keep the original vision of seeing a church planting movement taking root across Northern Mozambique.
