A: Yes, Mozambique went through a two decade war of political instability, but signed peace accords in 1994.

 

Q: Are you safe among an Islamic people?

A: Yes, the Islam in this area of Africa is not radical or even fundamentalist. It is tempered by the African traditional religious framework which mixes with Islam to create more of a folk Islam.

 

Q: Is there a Walmart near you?

A: Nobody has heard of Mr. Walton or his store over here!

 

Q: How big is Mozambique?

A: About twice the size of California.

 

Q: Is malaria a problem there?

A: Yes, various strains of malaria exist here. The main season for malaria is during the wet season. Many people suffer with this disease during this time of year. However, people continue to suffer from it throughout the year.

 

Q: Is AIDS a problem?

A: It seems to be worse in other African countries. However, there is definitely a problem. Lichinga has a big AIDS awareness program that a number of NGO’s are involved in promoting.

Q: Are there snakes in MZ?

A: Oh yeah, baby! They got everything from the Mozambican Spitting Cobra to the Black/Green Mambas which can slither with their “necks” sticking up 3-6 feet in the air.

 

Q: Does MZ have any nature reserves with the typical African wildlife?

A: Yes, there is actually a reserve in the Niassa province where we live. We haven’t visited yet, but they evidently have all the stuff.
